Near Dark (1987)

Near Dark (1987)

Director: Kathryn Bigelow
Starring: Adrian Pasdar, Jenny Wright, Lance Henriksen

Synopsis:
A young man is turned by a vampiress and taken in to her "family", where he must demonstrate that he can live like them or else his eternal life in the darkness will be cut short.

Impressions:
I decided to give this movie a try because half the vampire family comes straight off the set of Aliens. We've got Bishop, Hudson and Vasquez tearing up the backroads as redneck vampires. What's not to love? In all seriousness, I liked the premise of a newly turned vampire being initiated into a clan and the general family dynamic was really entertaining. Speaking of entertaining, Bill Paxton is amazing as Severan and he alone makes the movie worth watching. This is more grounded than most vampire fiction and if you're fed up with the direction the subgenre has been going in recent years, give this a shot as a breath of fresh air. The recent DVD cover is meant to appeal to Twilight fans, but don't let that fool you. This is nothing like that. It's actually good. ^o^
