Synopsis:
Mary Saotome transfers to Hyakkaou Private Academy, where gambling rules everything, with the intention of coming on top as the winner.

Impressions:
From starter villain to deuteragonist to star of her own spinoff, Mary has come a long way. In this series we get to see Mary's start of darkness as it were. She started out as a much nicer person but also not nearly accomplished as a gambler, yet there are still the seeds of what she would become when the main series kicked off. Some people criticize her little posse, but I think it helps further illustrate how much nicer she was before Hyakkaou took its toll on her. Main antagonist Juraku feels a bit like a budget Kirari, but I suppose it's a good warmup before Mary is ready to take on the big leagues. The games are decent and there are some fair twists and turns, but this does feel like the minor leagues, so your investment may not be as great. (Also, there are some who bemoan the absence of Jabami, but what do you expect from a prequel?) Anyway, for what it is, I enjoyed it and I think most fans of the franchise will find this worth a watch.
