Leviathan (1989)

Leviathan (1989)

Director: George P Cosmatos
Starring: Peter Weller, Richard Crenna, Amanda Pays

The crew of a deep-sea mining facility investigate a downed Soviet sub and bring back with them something terrible.

I wasn't expecting anything from this movie, but when I saw names like Peter Weller, Richard Crenna and Ernie Hudson in the cast, a musical score by Jerry Goldsmith and special effects by Stan Winston, I was ready to see more. If you've seen John Carpenter's The Thing, Alien, and The Abyss, you've seen everything this movie has to offer done better, but this is watchable enough, with the cast delivering adequate performances for what they have to work with. The special effect aren't quite up to the standards you'd expect from Stan Winston's shop, but I doubt they were getting paid as much and the practical effects still beat most of the CG you'll find out there. Don't expect greatness, but you could do worse. (I hear DeepStar Six is the real loser of the three-way duel including The Abyss and this film. Maybe I'll come across it for a future review.)
