Idiocracy (2006)

Idiocracy (2006)

Director: Mike Judge
Starring: Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard

Synopsis:
An Army slacker is selected for a cryonics experiment and wakes up 500 years in the future, where humanity has devolved into a race of total morons.

Impressions:
If you liked the incisive humor of director Mike Judge's Office Space, this film cuts even deeper. I joke that this isn't a fictional comedy but rather a documentary sent to us from the future as a warning. I know people who can no longer enjoy the movie because they see it coming to fruition a little too much in the rampant idiocy around them. Yes, it's as depressing as it is hilarious. Luke Wilson is well-suited for the role of everyman Joe and Dax Shepard is solid as the dim-witted Frito, but the real standout is Terry Crews as President Comacho. Yes, the humor tends to be crude and lowbrow and the more delicate sorts decry the supposedly eugenics-endorsing metatext (an unfair exaggeration in my view), but if you want to see a humorous take on dystopia that may well be a clearer vision of our future than most speculative fiction, give this one a watch.
