KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World (2016)

Synopsis:
A shut-in reincarnates in a fantasy world and is set on a quest to defeat the Demon King, but what seems like a dream come true quickly proves to be a raw deal.

Impressions:
The isekai subgenre has become rather oversaturated as of late, but I was hearing a lot of people talk about this series, so I decided to give it a try. If you're starting to find the whole isekai premise wearing a little thin, this may be just the series for you. Rather than trying to play it straight, this is instead a comedy that pokes fun at all the usual tropes and subverts almost all of the wish fulfillment qualities you normally find. Kazuma was a loser in his previous life and he's still a loser in the fantasy world. He's delightfully sharp-tongued and snarky, unpretentiously perverted but never to an obscene degree (and treated like the scumbag he is by just about everyone around him). He's got an entertaining crew of incompetents: an immature and ditzy goddess who inevitably causes more problems than she solves, a masochistic crusader who can take all the hits in the world but can't hit a thing herself (or, as one person put it, couldn't hit water if you threw her into the ocean), and a chuunibyou sorceress who refuses to learn any magic outside of a single flashy one-shot spell. There are some good dynamics with the party and watching them fumble about is great fun. This being a Studio Deen production, the actual production quality tends to be on the low side, but there are occasional flashes of brilliance and everything is entertaining enough that you can overlook the often wonky animation and slipshod consistency. I had fun with this and would easily recommend giving it a watch.
