Brave Bang Bravern! (2024)

Studio: CygamesPictures

Synopsis:
During the RIMPAC military exercises, Earth comes under attack by an alien menace, only to find an ally in the giant robot Bravern.

Impressions:
Looking at the synopsis above, you might be drawing some parallels to 2012's Battleship. We start off as a fairly grounded mecha mil-SF and then the flamboyant 80s-style giant robot shows up and we have an amusing blend of the two styles. (Imagine a bunch of very serious military officers having to sit by and listen to this brightly colored robot rattle off the saga of his passion for our main character like it's some Chuck Tingle novel.) The series' sense of humor is rather bent, but if you're game for it, it's a lot of fun. While our lead Isami is a bit of a wet blanket, he makes for a good foil to the boisterous Bravern and the more passionate Smith. I would've liked it if we had two cours to take our time a bit more and build up the supporting cast more, but what we get is quite satisfying. It may not click with everyone, but I had a lot of fun with this and would gladly recommend adding it to your collection.
