Impressions:
This is another one of those series I almost passed on until I started hearing recommendations for it. I have to wonder about my instincts as I overlook series I end up liking while picking up all manner of garbage. Anyway, this is a nice little slice-of-life that centers on a pseudo-parental relationship that has the audiences muttering under their breath, "Don't pull an Usagi Drop. Don't pull an Usagi Drop." If you have an interest in wagashi and/or have a Kansai-ben moe, you'll appreciate the setting. While the lead male Nagomu seems a little unreliable at first, he's incredibly good-natured and dedicated, to the point where you almost wonder why he gets as much crap as he does. (The running off for ten years does give his family some justification, I admit, but it still feels a bit unfair of them. Let's not even get started on Kanoko...) Itsuka is understandably guarded and her calm maturity contrary to her age makes for a fun contrast with Nagomu. The supporting cast is fairly solid and give the story a rather comfy vibe. We have a bit of a theme of broken relationships and the often clumsy efforts to repair them without resorting to overwrought melodrama. If you're looking for a solid slice-of-life with good character work, I happily recommend adding this to your collection.
