The War of the Gargantuas (1966)
[フランケンシュタインの怪獣 サンダ対ガイラ]

Director: Ishiro Honda
Starring: Russ Tamblyn, Kumi Mizuno, Kenji Sahara
Synopsis:
The appearance of a creature believed to be Frankenstein's monster draws the attention of the scientists who studied it five years earlier.
Impressions:
I don't know if anyone was clamoring for a sequel to Frankenstein vs. Baragon, but the good folks at Toho seemed to think it would be worth their while. Shoot, why not? They didn't get Nick Adams back as Dr. Bowen, so you're going to have to use your imagination a bit with the replacement. Taking the "mountain vs. sea" concept is a decent enough and the the contrast between Sanda and Gaira is reasonably compelling. The suits are ugly as sin, though, and bear little resemblance to the look from the previous film. There is some decent action to be had, but this is at best a mid-tier outing for Toho kaijuu flicks. Take it or leave it.
