Impressions:
I may not have been that much of a fan of the Show Era faceoff between Big Daddy G and Mothra, but I do appreciate all the continuity nods in this that will play well to people who liked it more. This film has the innovation of a destroyer counterpart to Mothra in the form of Battra, which adds a new threat and makes a more formidable opponent for Godzilla. The human story isn't quite a clumsy as its predecessor, but it can also be rather clumsy. The protagonist becomes largely irrelevant after the initial expedition to the island, but that's the hand we've been dealt. Honestly, if you ask me, Ando has a better character arc. Anyway, I consider this to be better than the Showa Era version, enough for me to give it a stronger endorsement. Give it a watch.
