Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)

Director: John Cherry
Starring: Jim Varney, Ertha Kitt, Austin Nagler
Synopsis:
A clutzy sanitation worker unwittingly breaks the seal on a vengeful troll that wreaked havoc on the town hundreds of years earlier.
Impressions:
I really enjoyed the Ernest movies growing up (the first four at least), so watching Troll and Troll 2 gave me a fine excuse to revisit this for review purposes. It's not high cinema, of course, but it plays well to a child audience (or at least I can remember how well the kid appeal worked for this particular child audience). Jim Varney is fun as always as Ernest, not to mention his assorted other characters he does for his multiple personality skits. I also really liked Ertha Kitt as Old Lady Hackmore. The effects for Trantor are also pretty good (and at least one of his scares are rather effective, I'd say). If you're looking for some lighthearted Halloween viewing with the kids, this is a fine choice. Give it a watch.
