Impressions:
While I haven't seen any of Robert Eggers' films before, I know they're well-regarded and I've been meaning to start digging into his filmography. I actually thought about watching this in the theaters, but the Christmas season isn't exactly the best time for a movie like this. Having just come off the '79 version, I didn't respond as well to the big-budget lavishness compared to its more restrained counterpart. Herzog was able to do more with less, but taking this on its own merits, even though it can feel a little overwrought at times, it's still rather effective at what it does, though here the acting is doing more of the heavy lifting than the atmosphere, which may or may not be your preference. The principal cast members all do their jobs well. I particularly liked Nicholas Hoult's portrayal of Hutter's terror and Willem Dafoe as the Van Helsing expy Von Franz. I kinda wish Bill Skarsgård could have dialed it back a notch or two as Orlok, but he plays the part of the monster to the hilt. While I prefer the '22 and '79 versions, this is still worth a watch, so give it a watch if you're in the mood for a new symphony of horror.
