Impressions:
This happens to be the third movie directed by Anthony Hopkins and the only one written by him. If you watch this movie, you may well be left doubting his sanity (and your own). Because I tend to like movies about making movies (particularly satire of the process), I got a fair bit of amusement out of this film. I suppose it's entirely deliberate, but the constant rapid cuts and disorienting zigzags leave you with no coherent story to follow. (Even what appears to be the main plotline is quickly thrown into doubt.) There are some strong performances here. I particularly liked Jeffery Tambor and John Turturro. Kevin McCarthy's role was also good. Because the movie is such an aggressive mind screw, it's definitely not for general audiences. If you like to have your head messed with and enjoy satire about filmmaking, you may just find it worth watching, but bear my warning well in mind before going in.
