Underworld: Evolution (2006)

Director: Len Wiseman
Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Tony Curran
Synopsis:
Selene moves to prevent Kraven from killing the last elder Markus so she can appeal to him to save Michael, but things do not go as planned and the conflict that follows goes to the very roots of the war between vampires and Lycans.
Impressions:
I liked the original Underworld well enough, so it's a bit of a surprise I haven't watched the sequel until now, 20 years later. To put it at its simplest and briefest, if you liked the first movie, you should like this two. The plot's a bit messy and the pacing uneven, but it's a natural continuation of the previous film that digs deeper into the world's lore with a number of solid action set pieces. Now, at least some of the conflict feels a bit unnecessary, as the fighting kicks off when it really shouldn't have to, but so it goes. Like the first film, it may feel a bit style over substance, but I do appreciate the work that went into lore, imperfectly though it may have been spun into a narrative. I'd say give it a watch. There's a little less novelty this time around, inevitable with sequels, but the expansion of what we had may be enough for you to consider it worth the price of admission.
