Death Note - Volume 3 (2004)

Author: Tsugumi Ohba
Artist: Takeshi Obata
Publisher: Jump Comics

Synopsis:
Knowing he is under observation, Light works to throw L off the trail.

Story/Characters:
Light's maneuvering while being observed is rather impressive, but the real cat-and-mouse fun begins when L makes his next big move. I can't really talk about the plot of most of the volume without revealing this, so spoiler alert. Anyway, L confronts Light directly and as much of a risk as it is for L, it puts Light at more of a disadvantage than anything and his reaction is priceless.

We then begin the story's relationship with Sakura TV when the Second Kira emerges. This adds a nice wrinkle to the plot and a character I'll talk about more next time.

Art:
The art maintains the standard you'd expect. Light losing it is especially good. And as a side note, for anime viewers thinking of the memetic potato chip scene, you'll be surprised how understated it is here. Also, the police response to the Sakura TV situation is something to see.

Conclusion:
The heat really gets turned up here. It may well represent some of the best escalation in the entire series. It's definitely worth having and it'll leave you wanting more.
