Fullmetal Alchemist (2006)

[鋼の錬金術師]

Volume 13

Fullmetal Alchemist - Volume 13 (2006)

Author/Artist: Hiromu Arakawa
Publisher: Gangan Comics

Synopsis:
When Envy tries to intervene to stop a berserk Gluttony, he gets dragged into the fight with the Elrics and Ling Yao.

Story/Characters:
I've got to spoil the early part of this volume or else I can't talk about the rest of it. Ed spends most of the volume with Ling and Envy in the pocket dimension inside Gluttony's belly. This gives us some good development for Envy. Meanwhile, Colonel Mustang puts some feelers out to the higher-ups and gets smacked hard with the realization of how extensive the rot is and has to face the consequences. Al manages to convince Gluttony to take him to "Father" in a bid to save Ed and this leads to Mei and Scar venturing down below as well. We also get some of King Bradley's backstory, which sheds some light on how the homunculi are produced. Ed makes another visit to the Gate of Truth, leading to a big reveal.

Art:
We get some good fight scenes as usual. The pocket dimension is neatly creepy and Envy's true form is quite the eldritch horror.

Other:
We get just one 4-koma this time around.

Conclusion:
There's some big stuff that goes down this volume. The interactions with Envy particularly stand out and we're pulling everyone together for the mid-series confrontation with the big bad. Give it a read.
