Fullmetal Alchemist - Volume 27 (2010)

Author/Artist: Hiromu Arakawa
Publisher: Gangan Comics

Synopsis:
Father emerges from underground for the final battle.

Story/Characters:
Our heroes have been pushed to their breaking point and they throw everything they've got at Father to put an end to his schemes once and for all. It's great seeing everyone come together. There are some touching sacrifices on the way and when the final battle comes to a close, you're left feeling rather fulfilled. But wait, there's more. A decent chunk of the volume is dedicated to the epilogue, where we get to see the Elrics pursue their new mission in life. It makes for a nice cherry on top.

Art:
Chapter 107 has a nice two-page spread of dang near the entire cast of the series raising their fists in victory. Amusingly, the dead are extending their fists from off panel. The visuals are up to the task of delivering the grand finale. It get particularly good once the tide starts to turn. Finally, I like the montage of photos at the end. It's a nice way to close things out.

Other:
The bonus comic gives us a different take on one of the photos in the final montage. There's a side chapter that deals with the final disposition of Al's armor, we get six 4-koma and a three-page comic to close it all out on a poignant note.

Conclusion:
It's been quite a ride. To think where we'd be now compared to how lukewarm I felt at the start. Not all stories get a conclusion this satisfying, so it's a treat to see a finale done right. There are a lot of character arcs to tie up and I feel it was done adroitly. Looking at the final payoff, I'd say it's enough to make the entire series worth having. Add this one to your collection.
