Kaguya-sama: Love is War - Volume 5 (2017)

Author/Artist: Aka Akasaka
Publisher: Young Jump Comics

Synopsis:
Shirogane and Shinomiya are having a miserable summer vacation because neither wants to be the first one to ask the other out.

Story/Characters:
I love how the series pulls no punches making it clear that Shirogane and Shinomiya's pride is the primary obstacle to their happiness. We then have the hilarity of the technologically illiterate Shinomiya trying to get on to Twitter and all the trouble it makes for Hayasaka, who just wants to take a bath. Next is the great ramen chapter, introducing the first of the Four Ramen Kings. We follow that with the excellent fireworks two-parter. The aftermath is hilarious. It's great how Akasaka plays with the tropes of romantic fiction. Kashiwagi and her boyfriend have some fun with the student council. Then we have Mama Chika's cooking class, another one of those chapters that didn't make it into the anime. We close with birthday divination, which has fun character moments for our core quartet.

Art:
Akasaka really goes all out for the fireworks two-parter. Hayasaka fans will probably appreciate the Twitter chapter. As always, we get a number of great reaction shots throughout.

Other:
I like how the relationship chart has changed. The Mama Chika experience has changed her regard for Shirogane significantly, from "admiration" to "If it wasn't for me..." ^o^

Conclusion:
The fireworks two-parter alone makes this volume worth having, but we also get some comedic highlights such as the ramen, Twitter and Nirvana chapters. Fans of the series have every reason to be happy with this one. Get it.
