King of the Underworld (1939)

King of the Underworld (1939)

Director: Lewis Seiler
Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Kay Francis, James Stephenson

Synopsis:
The wife of a slain mob doctor has to clear her name by exposing the mob boss her husband worked for.

Impressions:
While this isn't an exceptional movie, it does stand out a bit in that the female lead is a doctor who never gets pigeonholed in the damsel in distress role. Humphrey Bogart is amusing as a rather thick-headed mobster with delusions of grandeur. (You're bound to get a chuckle out of him proudly declaring to his even dumber mooks that the heroine declared him a "moronic type".) So long as you don't expect more from it than what it has to offer, it's a decent enough watch.
