Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)

Director: Frank Capra
Starring: Gary Cooper, Jean Arthur, George Bancroft
Synopsis:
A small-town man inherits a fortune and goes to New York, where he must contend with a bevy of snobs, moochers and schemers.
Impressions:
I've seen the more recent remake starring Adam Sandler, so I wanted to give the original a try. A lot of these modern remakes are just in name only, but I was surprised how much carried over. Obviously, Gary Cooper is a much different sort of leading man than Sandler, but I'm not going to spend this review comparing old and new. On its own merits, this is a nice charming movie, the sort you'd expect from a Frank Capra film. Cooper lends a lot of folksy charm to the character of Longfellow Deeds. I also really liked Raymond Walburn as the valet Walter. The comedy is pretty good and as I said before, there's a lot of charm. Definitely give this one a watch.
