Rembrandt (1936)

Director: Alexander Korda
Starring: Charles Laughton, Gertrude Lawrence, Elsa Lanchester
Synopsis:
A look at the life of celebrated Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, from the height of his popularity to his subsequent decline.
Impressions:
It's a shame this one didn't do well at the box office, because it would have been interesting to see the series of biopics Alexander Korda had planned. This is one of Charles Laughton's earlier leading roles, but he's no less talented here than in his later roles (though he is a fair bit thinner). He delivers some rather amazing monologues. While the story leans on some apparent myths about Rembrandt's life, it's a solid dramatization and certainly worth watching by any art lover.
