Crash Dive (1943)

Crash Dive (1943)

Director: Archie Mayo
Starring: Tyrone Power, Anne Baxter, Dana Andrews

Synopsis:
A PT boat commander is transferred to a submarine, unaware that the girl he is pursuing is involved with his new captain.

Impressions:
You wouldn't think a movie has to go out of its way to convince you that submarines are cool, but that seems to be one of the ancillary goals of this film. While I generally like Tyrone Power, this isn't one of his better movies. As a submarine flick, it's rather meh and love story is even more meh. Because Commander Connors isn't really established that well, the love triangle doesn't have that much punch to it. The B plot with the aging and ailing chief played by Jackie Gleason is okay, I guess, but it felt a bit like a distraction. There isn't anything that exceptional about this that would compel you to watch, but it isn't terrible either. Take it or leave it.
