Keeper of the Flame (1942)

Director: George Cukor
Starring: Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Richard Whorf
Synopsis:
A highly regarded journalist returning from Europe is assigned to work on the biography of a philanthropist who recently died, but the deeper he digs into the story, the true nature of the hero comes to light.
Impressions:
I usually don't go for the intrepid journalist character, mostly due to my disdain for their profession, but this really is a good movie. Because of the time it was made, there's some rather obvious monologuing on our virtues as a nation, but it works well enough in context as main character had just returned from Europe and was expounding on our ideals to a kid. You'll probably be able to see the twist coming, but they weave around a bit to keep you from getting a clear handle on all of it until the final reveal. Regarding the final reveal, without spoiling anything, compare and contrast this film with Gabriel Over the White House. As always, it's nice to see Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn playing off each other. Definitely give this one a watch.
