I Accuse (1958)

I Accuse (1958)

Director: José Ferrer
Starring: José Ferrer, Anton Walbrook, Viveca Lindfors

Synopsis:
A French Army officer is framed for espionage and treason and sent to Devil's Island while his family and allies seek to clear his name.

Impressions:
Usually these historical movies are rather light on the historical accuracy, but this one pays more attention to detail than most and if you're a history buff, you'll appreciate that. José Ferrer is quite good as Captain Dreyfus, particularly in the scene where he's cashiered. Anton Walbrook is also good as the slimy Major Esterhazy and Emlyn Williams gives a stirring read of the "J'accuse..." letter as Emile Zola. The courtroom drama of the second trial is rather powerful. If you have any interest in the Dreyfus Affair at all, I strongly recommend you watch this one.
