Lord of the Flies (1963)

Lord of the Flies (1963)

Director: Peter Brook
Starring: James Aubrey, Tom Chapin, Hugh Edwards

Synopsis:
A group of boys survive a plane crash and find themselves on a desert island, where they steadily descend into savagery.

Impressions:
This movie was done on a slim budget and I don't think a single one of the child actors in the cast are professionals. As a result, you'll see plenty of choppy editing and stilted delivery, but there's also a naturalism to it. When the boys go wild, it feels very real, which is rather chilling. Of the cast, I'd say Tom Chapin as Jack has the best acting chops and he's perhaps the character who needs it most. Its flaws can't be denied, but it successfully delivers on the visceral quality of the source novel and for that it's worth seeing.
