Kickboxer 2: The Road Back (1991)

Kickboxer 2: The Road Back (1991)

Director: Albert Pyun
Starring: Sasha Mitchell, Peter Boyle, Dennis Chan

Synopsis:
The youngest Sloane brother returns to competitive kickboxing to raise the money to support his struggling gym.

Impressions:
I actually thought I'd seen the first Kickboxer, but only when I was about 20 minutes in did I realize I was thinking about Bloodsport. Well, I guess it didn't matter too much. Fans of the original may be annoyed that the main characters were killed offscreen and we now follow a third brother who received no mention in the previous film. I wasn't aware that Sasha Mitchell was actually a fairly accomplished martial artist and he does fairly well as the lead here. The story is fairly stock for a martial arts movie, but fans of comic book movies might be interested to know that David S Goyer was the writer on this one. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa does well in his typical villainous role as Sanga and Michel Qissi is solid as the bestial Tong Po. I also rather liked Dennis Chan as Xian. It's not a great movie, but if you like movies like this, it's decent enough. Take it or leave it.
