The POTC sequels are contentious with the fans. Not quite as bad as the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, but fraught with controversy all the same. One of the main issues is the chronic backstabbing that afflicts even the more paragon characters like Will and Elizabeth. It gets its start here and goes all the way in the third movie. Many people get tired of trying to keep track of the ever-shifting alliances and with everyone being a self-centered cutthroat makes it hard to sympathize with anyone. I personally didn't have that much of a problem with it, particularly in this one where Will breaking out of the goody two-shoes mold was kinda refreshing. While you can argue the payoff for all the setup falls short, that's a complaint for the next movie. Here, at least, the complex plot that's brewing has promise. Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow is of course the main source of entertainment value, but I also want to give particular note to Bill Nighy as Davy Jones. ILM brings the goods as far as the visuals go. The designs of the Flying Dutchman, her crew and the Kraken are all rather inventive. If you enjoyed the first film, you should like this, too. Give it a watch.
