In my review for the previous film, I mention some of the problems viewers have with the POTC sequels, namely all the backstabbery that erodes pretty much any sympathy you might have for the cast. A lot of people seem to find themselves without much emotional investment in the characters or the plot. As for me, I do feel the story kinda got away from them. A lot of it feels more like spectacle for spectacle's sake that loses touch with the charm that made the first film so enjoyable. Speaking of the spectacle, if you're watching primarily for the visual experience, you shouldn't be too disappointed on that front. The Brethren Court is an amusing gaggle of characters. I do like the in-joke of casting Keith Richards as Jack's father Captain Teague. One of the disappointing things for me was what I feel to be the criminal underutilization of Chow Yun-fat. I guess I was just wanting to see Sao Feng flying through the air in slow motion dual-wielding flintlocks while a ridiculous number of seagulls are flying in the background. So it goes. If you didn't mind the second film, you'll probably like this well enough. However, if the second movie turned you off to the series, this one isn't going to change your mind. I'm narrowly going to rate this one as a watch, but it's a conditional recommendation.
