Impressions:
The original short film left a strong impression and my interest was piqued when I heard that Studio Trigger was resorting to crowdfunding to help finance a sequel. You don't have to have seen the prior short, but it would give you a little more grounding. For viewers introduced to the franchise via the TV series, bear in mind that this takes place in an alternate continuity. Even though Akko remains a screwup, she has more magical ability here. This marks the introduction of the supporting trio of Amanda, Constanze and Jasminka, who also feature prominently in the TV series. I usually don't like movies that take an established group of characters and hand them the conflict ball for the sake of the plot, but the tensions that crop up in the main trio of Akko, Lotte and Sucy and their resolution do some good things for their characterization, so it's worthwhile. This is well worth having for any anime fan (especially Trigger fans) and if you liked what you saw in the original short, you'll definitely want to catch this as well.
