Macross Frontier: The Wings of Goodbye (2011)

Director: Shoji Kawamori
Starring: Yuuichi Nakamura, Aya Endou, Megumi Nakajima

Synopsis:
After repelling the Vajra attack, the members of SMS enjoy some R&R, but the war is far from over and plots behind the scenes are on the verge of coming to fruition.

Impressions:
The previous film largely followed the plot of the TV series with a number of notable changes. This film, however, is almost completely different. How the plot stacks up to the original is a matter personal taste, but as far as delivering a new experience to warrant the price of admission goes, this definitely fits the bill. We get plenty of all-new set pieces which are all quite nice. I have to say, the concert at the beginning shows that Sheryl is putting serious effort into challenging Sharon Apple when it comes to mindscrew performances. And those lyrics... Anyway, expect to be surprised when you see the antagonistic conspiracies play out. And as far as themes go, I think this is actually even more effective than the original series when it comes to conveying the Vajra's feelings. Also, if you care about the shipping wars, rather than the more ambiguous note of the TV series, this movie offers a clear answer on the love triangle. Perhaps because so much of the content is original, the story quite comfortably fit in the container it was given. I was satisfied with my viewing experience and gladly recommend giving this a watch.
