Synopsis:

Impressions:
I remember the mixed reviews this got when it came out, so I didn't feel much of a pressing need to watch it myself. This was proven to be a mistake, as I rather liked this. I suppose the setting was changed to the Victorian Era for the late Gothic horror aesthetic and it works to the film's credit. The atmosphere is excellent and I particularly like the dynamic between Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. I also liked Hugo Weaving as the Javert-like Inspector Aberline. While there is CG used for the transformations and such, there are also practical creature effects by none other than Rick Baker (who apparently really wanted to do the sort of practical transformation he's famous for but couldn't due to the short shooting schedule). All in all, this is a solid remake that pays plenty of due tribute to the original and is well worth a watch.
