The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (2024)

Director: Peter Browngardt
Starring: Eric Bauza, Candi Milo, Peter MacNicol

Synopsis:
With their house in danger of being condemned, Daffy and Porky make clumsy attempts to earn money for repairs, all while strange events occur following a meteor crash.

Impressions:
If I hadn't heard a podcaster lamenting this movie's poor box office performance and what it would mean for 2D theatrical animation in the US, I probably wouldn't have known it existed at all. To my knowledge, the last time the Looney Tunes characters were on the big screen was Space Jam: A New Legacy, and we don't talk about that. If you're a fan of the Looney Tunes, you'll appreciate the nods to the franchise's history with more of a 30s-style animation with the childhood sequence and the fact that Daffy is truer to his classic incarnation than the character shift he had in 50s and 60s as a foil to Bugs (who doesn't appear here). Porky and Petunia have good chemistry, but this of course comes with inevitable friction in his relationship with Daffy. There's a big twist that really doesn't feel earned, but so it goes. The jokes and hijinx generally land, so it is indeed a shame that this didn't find more commercial success, as I wouldn't have minded seeing more films like this every two or three years. It's definitely worth a watch, especially if you're a Looney Tunes fan.
