The Ancient Magus' Bride: Those Awaiting a Star (2016-2017)

Director: Norihiro Naganuma
Studio: Wit Studio
Starring: Atsumi Tanezaki, Ryota Takeuchi, Koki Uchiyama
Episodes: 3

Synopsis:
With a delivery of study materials, Chise receives a book from Angelica that reminds her of an episode from her past.

Impressions:
It's interesting that the release of the first episode preceded the launch of the TV series. I would have to wonder how a viewer would take this without having the context of the main story. That being said, the story here is mostly self-contained and I think it's still fairly accessible. We get a look at Chise's awful childhood and a moment of respite when she discovers the enchanted library. There's a nice building tension as we get hints of something darker going on with the library and its librarian that brings us to a tragic, bittersweet conclusion. The tone and sense of mysticism gives a similar feel to some Ghibli films. It's quite good and worth having, especially for fans of the franchise.
