Mad Love (1935)

Mad Love (1935)

Director: Karl Freund
Starring: Peter Lorre, Frances Drake, Colin Clive

Synopsis:
A surgeon obsessed with an actress performs an experimental hand transplant for her husband using the hands of an executed murderer.

Impressions:
This film is both Peter Lorre's American debut and the last directorial outing of famed cinematographer Karl Freund. Lorre is always entertaining, particularly once he goes over the deep end. There's this rig he gets in to trigger a major event later in the film and he almost looks like a Cenobite. Really cool. Although his time onscreen was brief, I really liked Edward Brophy as Rollo, perhaps the most personable murderer I've seen. Also note Keye Luke (Kato in the 40s and Lee Chan a lot of the 30s Charlie Chan films) as Dr. Gogol's assistant Dr. Wong. This is a good movie and I recommend giving it a watch.
