Picnic (1955)

Picnic (1955)

Director: Joshua Logan
Starring: William Holden Kim Novak, Betty Field

Synopsis:
A drifter shakes up a small town during its Labor Day celebration.

Impressions:
This is an interesting character study which definitely shows its roots in the theater. While William Holden seems a good ten years too old for the role, he does well (and you could argue that his age actually works in favor of the characterization). I also rather liked Susan Strasberg as the precocious Millie. It's also interesting seeing Verna Felton, who played the Fairy Godmother in Disney's Cinderella, in a live-action role. If you like the kind of stories that were popular on the stage from the era, about dysfunctional people breaking down horribly, this one's for you.
