Prince of Foxes (1949)

Prince of Foxes (1949)

Director: Henry King
Starring: Tyrone Power, Orson Welles, Wanda Hendrix

Synopsis:
An ambitious young agent for the Borgias is dispatched to deliver a city into Duke Cesare's hands, but his time with the aging lord of the city prompts a change of heart.

Impressions:
Tyrone Power and Orson Welles? Sign me up. I imagine Assassin's Creed and The Borgias have given the feuding and intrigue of Renaissance Italy some added currency among contemporary audiences. The period certainly provides plenty of fertile ground for telling a good story. I would've liked to see more of Cesare because Orson Welles dominates every scene hes in as he's known to do. That's not to detract from Tyrone Power's performance, as he's strong in the lead role and his character has a good character arc. It's also worth noting that a lot of the filming was done on location in Italy. The big battle sequences are also fairly well done. If you have an interest in historical fiction and Renaissance Italy in particular, you should be able to appreciate this one. Give it a watch.
